Legislation introduced in the formal Senate could make auto insurance in Michigan more affordable for some motorists.
State Senator Virgil Smith authored a bill that would, among other things, sell stripped-down auto insurance to low-income drivers that have exhibited a strong driving record. State law requires auto insurance policies classify unlimited personal injury protection , a fact that requires many state insurance companies to charge inebriated premiums. That puts a heavy burden on many low-income drivers, Smith told the Detroit Free Steam, and added his legislation would ideally provide bare-bones coverage for those motorists for less than $1,000 per year. That would be half of what a correspond to policy costs currently.
