Do i need to keep auto insurance if moving out of USA for 3-4 months?

I am mobile out of USA for 3-4 months and i am planning to keep my car at friends garage.Do i still need to keep auto insurance? Do i also need to cancel registration?

Many states,NC where I loaded included, require you to keep insurance as long as the registration is current. If you cancel your ins. policy the ins. co. notifies the state and they require you to bring over in the tags. I guess it helps keep uninsured
